Vincent tapped me on the shoulder as I was trying to corral Knox and Liz into my mother’s car. She was so keyed up, she offered to drive us all to Moon Point. I held up a finger asking them to wait for me.

“What’s up?” I huffed, anxious to get going. I didn’t want to waste a single second that we could be searching for Rain.

“Sunshine, I don’t know that the evidence points toward the high school gang rivalry. What would a bunch of high school students want with a baby? Surely they would understand the grave consequences of such an action—”

“Vincent, have you actually ever been around high school students?” I didn’t mean to defy this authority as Chief of Police or disrespect his experience as a law enforcement officer, but we already knew what these kids were capable of. And every prank seemed to be a bit of an escalation. Setting fire to the community Christmas tree? They could have burned down the entire town of Moon Point!

His lips thinned and jaw ticked as he replied, “I have, Sunshine, and I know you have as well, but I am afraid the baby’s life may be in danger if it’s not a so-called ‘harmless’ prank by a bunch of idiot adolescents.”

“Her life could be in danger either way, but this makes total sense. Don’t you see? Joseph was being portrayed by the ringleader of the BBs. The Empies kidnapped Baby Jesus to get back at Joel and his gang for torching their town tree.” I didn’t know how I could explain it any more clearly than that. “Besides, if it’s not them, then who? You didn’t find any other evidence, and neither did I—besides the dog biscuit.”

“And you think a dog treat is evidence that a bunch of teenagers did this?” His nostrils flared as he stared at me, but it seemed clear he didn’t want to hear my rational arguments. His mind was made up, as evidenced by the way he crossed his arms over his chest.

So much for our first date. We were already in a fight.

I didn’t feel much like being around him right now. If he couldn’t trust my hunches when I knew not only this town but teenagers better than anyone in Bryce Beach due to my many, many years as a young adult librarian, then maybe we didn’t make a good team after all.

“Why don’t I head to Moon Point to explore this lead? You can stay here and pursue…your lead.” Those last two words came out a little more sarcastic than I intended.

“Very well then,” he said with very little inflection. His face was expressionless as he simply nodded and pivoted toward his Tahoe.

My mother gave me a concerned look as I climbed in next to her in her Camry. “You all ready to head to Moon Point?”

“I just found out their high school is having their Christmas dance tonight,” Liz said without looking up from her phone. “I’m trying to gather some clues so I can find their Discord server.
